THE HOT CORNER
1 PRO SOCCER:
European soccer’s governing body postponed its marquee championship for one year. Euro 2020 became Euro 2021 because of the virus outbreak. The tournament that was due to open June 12 in Rome is now scheduled for next year from June 11 to July 11, in the same 12 host nations. The Euro final typically attracts a TV audience of 300 million and the 51-game event made UEFA a $912 million profit four years ago. In a coordinated move, UEFA was followed Tuesday by South America’s CONMEBOL postponing the Copa America one year to the same playing dates.
2 PRO SOCCER:
As a different set of lawyers took over for the U.S. Soccer Federation, new USSF President Cindy Parlow Cone disavowed papers submitted by the previous attorneys who argued women’s players had lesser skills and responsibilities than males. Parlow Cone took over as head of American soccer’s governing body last week when Carlos Cordeiro abruptly resigned because of the backlash over the documents, submitted by the USSF as it defended a gender discrimination lawsuit filed by women’s national team players.
3 HIGH SCHOOLS:
National Letter of Intent signings for college athletes have been suspended until April 15 and will be reevaluated on or before that date. The Division I football signing period that was scheduled to end April 1 will be extended for 30 days after it resumes.
PRO BASEBALL: 4
MLB teams pledged $30 million for ballpark workers who’ll lose income because of the delayed season.
5 PRO WRESTLING:
WrestleMania — often called the Super Bowl of wrestling — will not be held at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Fla., but WWE said it will still hold the April 5 card on a closed set at its training facility in Orlando.
