TENNIS:
The Rogers Cup women’s tournament will not be played this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Tennis Canada announced Saturday the event, scheduled for Aug. 7-16 in Montreal, is off the schedule. Quebec’s government announced Friday no sporting events could be held through Aug. 31, though it left the door slightly open for pro teams.
COLLEGE BASKETBALL:
Ivy League scoring leader Mike Smith said Friday he’s transferring to Michigan. The 5-foot-11 Smith averaged 22.8 points last season at Columbia. He’s ranked 11th by ESPN. com among grad transfers with immediate eligibility.
PRO BASKETBALL:
Josh Green is the latest Arizona freshman to declare for the NBA draft. Green made the expected announcement Friday, joining Nico Mannion and Zeke Nnaji in leaving early. Green averaged 12 points, 4.6 rebounds and 2.6 assists during his lone season with the Wildcats. He’s projected to be a first-round pick.
COLLEGE BASKETBALL:
Long Beach State center Joshua Morgan became the fourth player to announce his transfer to USC this offseason. As a freshman, the 6-11 Morgan was named Big West defensive player of the year. He was 19th in the nation with 2.5 blocks a game and averaged 8.4 points and 6.1 rebounds.
OBITUARY:
William H. “Bill” Millsaps Jr., an award-winning sportswriter and executive at the Richmond (Va.) Times-Dispatch during a nearly 40-year career, has died. Millsaps died Friday night at his home after a period of declining health, his wife, Nancy, said Saturday. He was 77. Millsaps, a native of Daisy, Tennessee, played basketball at the University of Tennessee.
