QUICK HITS
1 German economy: The German economy shrank by 2.2% in the first quarter compared with the previous three-month period as shutdowns in the country and beyond started to bite, official data showed Friday. That means Europe’s biggest economy went into recession following a small dip at the end of last year.
2 Oil shipment: The United States has dispatched a shipment of oil to Belarus, which is seeking to diversify its supplies after a price dispute with Russia, the Belarusian government said Friday. The 80,000-ton shipment is expected to arrive at the Lithuanian port of Klaipeda in June and from there will sent by rail to Belarus.
3 NY help: New York City will spend $55 million to provide 74,000 free air conditioners to low-income older adults who may be cooped up inside their apartments all summer because of the coronavirus pandemic, Mayor Bill de Blasio said Friday. “Knowing that low-income seniors are the most vulnerable, we’re going to start an initiative right away to get them air conditioners,” de Blasio said.
Festival postponed: The 4 Monterey Jazz Festival won’t happen this year. It’s the first time in the event’s 60-plus years of existence that the festival has been canceled or, as organizers are labeling it, postponed until next year. Call it what you want. The result is the same: Jazz fans won’t be spending the weekend at the Monterey County (California) Fairgrounds in 2020.
New restrictions: The Trump 5 administration issued new rules Friday that will bar Huawei and its suppliers from using U.S. technology and software, a significant escalation in its battle with the Chinese telecom giant and one that will likely inflame tensions with Beijing.
