THE HOT CORNER
COLLEGES:
Furman University is eliminating baseball and men’s lacrosse as part of a universitywide plan to offset losses due to the coronavirus pandemic. The school said the cuts would save about $5 million. There are no plans to reinstate teams should financial conditions improve, the Southern Conference school said. Other cost-cutting measures include 10% salary cuts for the athletic director and football and men’s basketball coaches.
PRO SOCCER:
Serie A is suspended until June 14 unless the Italian government gives it the green light to resume a day earlier as planned. The league announced last week that its 20 teams agreed to resume competition on June 13 in empty stadiums. However, the Italian soccer federation announced Monday, a day after a government decree banning sports until June 14, that it was complying.
COLLEGE BASKETBALL:
Vanderbilt signed guard Isaac McBride as a transfer from Kansas. The 6-foot-1 guard from Little Rock was the 2019 Arkansas Gatorade Player of the Year and rated a four-star player by Rivals.com for the 2019 class. He signed with Kansas but left school last September.
COLLEGE BASKETBALL:
Linc Darner is out as men’s coach at Green Bay after posting winning records in four of his five seasons on the job. Chancellor Michael Alexander said in a statement the university and coach “decided to part ways.” Darner was 92-80 at Green Bay.
BASEBALL:
USA Baseball tentatively scheduled July 24 as the start date for its 2020 schedule of summer events. The governing body says the first event would be the 14U Cup from July 24-26 at the national training complex in Cary, North Carolina. Eight other age-group competitions will be held from late July through August.
