Eight lawyers and a judge
Here are the attorneys and the judge involved in the case of Gregory McMichael and Travis McMichael, who are charged with killing Ahmaud Arbery.
The judge
■ Judge Timothy Walmsley: Walmsley, a Savannah judge, was assigned the case after judges in the Brunswick area, where Arbery was killed, recused themselves. Walmsley was appointed to the Superior Court by Gov. Nathan Deal in 2012.
The prosecution
■ District Attorney Joyette Holmes: Holmes was appointed by Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr to prosecute the case after two Brunswick-area prosecutors recused themselves. Holmes has worked as a magistrate, defense attorney and prosecutor. She has served in her role as Cobb County district attorney for the past 10 months.
The defense Representing Travis McMichael
■ Robert Rubin: Rubin is a former Fulton County public defender and partner in a Decatur law firm. He was co-counsel to energy executive Hemy Neuman, who was charged with fatally shooting entrepreneur Rusty Sneiderman outside his children’s day care in Dunwoody.
■ Jason Sheffield: He is a partner in the firm Peters, Rubin, Sheffield and Roberts.
Representing Gregory McMichael
■ Frankin J. Hogue: He represented convicted killer Stephen McDaniel in 2011. McDaniel faced the death penalty in the murder of Mercer University law school graduate Lauren Giddings, whose dismembered torso was found in a rolling trash can outside her apartment.
■ Laura D. Hogue: She is a former president of the Georgia Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. She was the 10th woman to hold the position in 50 years.
Representing the family of Ahmaud Arbery
■ Benjamin Crump: A Florida-based attorney, he represented the parents of teen Trayvon Martin, who was killed in an encounter with neighborhood watchman George Zimmerman.
■ S. Lee Merritt: A Morehouse College graduate, Merritt is a Philadelphia-based attorney who has represented families nationwide in excessive force cases.
■ L. Chris Stewart: CEO of Atlanta-based Stewart Trial Attorneys, he is known best for representing the family of Walter Scott, whose death was captured on video when he was shot in the back by a North Charleston, S.C., police officer after fleeing a traffic stop.
