Those who had contact with pastor urged to get tested
Well-wishers send prayers for Smyrna priest in quarantine.
The pastor at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church has tested positive for COVID-19 but is currently asymptomatic.
According to the Smyrna church’s Facebook page, the Rev. Brian R. Sheridan tested positive May 23 and is in quarantine for 10 days.
The test was taken before churches in the archdiocese began holding daily Mass.
Other priests in the parish tested negative.
A spokeswoman said the Archdiocese of Atlanta is aware of the diagnosis.
The church asks that anyone who has been in “contact with Fr. Brian in recent weeks should get tested. If you know anyone who may have interacted with Fr. Brian, please share this message with him/her,” according to the post.
Sheridan has been transparent about testing positive. Meanwhile, many people posted wellwishes on Facebook.
“Father Brian we are all Praying for you it’s going to be ok will get through this. Stay Well. We love you,” one woman wrote.
Anotherposted:“Wow!Liftingour Fr. Brian in prayers. May Almighty God protect him so he remains asymptomatic. I cover him with the precious blood of the Lamb!”
The Facebook posting noted that those who live in Cobb or Douglas counties can make an appointment with the county health department for COVID-19 testing by calling 770-514-2300.
The church has stopped daily broadcasts of the Mass in English and Spanish. It will allow for staff to be tested and a thorough cleaning of the building.
The Archdiocese of Atlanta began daily in-person Masses earlier this week in what Archbishop Gregory J. Hartmayer called a “measured and careful approach.”
Weekend Masses will begin in person on Saturday and Sunday under specific recommendations that include social distancing, no physical contact during the sign of peace and one-way aisles for Holy Communion. Masks are also allowed.
