Council OKs SPLOST 2022 project list

New projects were approved recently by the Smyrna City Council if Cobb County voters renew the special-purpose local option sales tax (SPLOST) for 2022 on Nov. 3.

Due to the pandemic, this proposed list has not been presented at a public input session, according to a city statement.

Smyrna is expected to collect $60,240,569 over the six years to be covered by SPLOST 2022 if Cobb voters decide to continue the 1-cent extra that is charged on the county sales tax. Projects include:

■ Citywide of $26,815,569would cover Downtown and South Cobb Drive improvemen­ts of $13,315,569; facilityim­provements of $1 million; environmen­tal improvemen­ts of $500,000 and aquatics, gymnastics and the Family Learning Library at $12 million.

■ Parks of $3.8 million would include restrooms at North Cooper Lake Park at $300,000; park land acquisitio­n at $2 million and a splashpad/spraygroun­d at $1.5 million.

■ Transporta­tion of $22,125,000 would cover the Downtown Parking Deck at $4 million; the Cobb Parkway Pedestrian Bridge to The Battery at $4 million; resurfacin­g at $6 million; curb and gutter at $300,000; Camp Highland — complete bridge replacemen­t at $1,625,000; sidewalks/trails/greenways/beautifica­tion at $5 million and traffic calming at $1.2 million.

■ Public Safety of $2.5 million would include a radio replacemen­t at $2.2 million and small equipment for the Fire Department at $300,000.

■ Joint city/county projects of $5 million would cover East West Connector roadway safety improvemen­ts at $2.25 million with $1 million by Smyrna and $1.25 million by Cobb; Windy Hill Parkway improvemen­ts at $1.25 million with $250,000 by Smyrna and $1 million by Cobb and conversion of sports lighting to LED on all sports fields/courts at $1.5 million with $750,000 by Smyrna and $750,000 by Cobb.
