THE HOT CORNER
PRO SOCCER:
A rare level of secrecy cloaks the court case opening Monday to decide if Manchester City will stay banned from European competition for two seasons. The Court of Arbitration for Sport scheduled three days at an undisclosed location for an appeal hearing by video conference link. The Switzerland-based court said City and UEFA requested confidentiality for the case. Allegations include that City, owned by Abu Dhabi’s royal family, misled UEFA over several years to comply with financial integrity rules for clubs.
PRO BASEBALL:
MLB players accused teams of “depriving America of baseball games” as part of a money fight set off by the coronavirus pandemic. Bruce Meyer, the union’s chief negotiator, sent a letter to Deputy Commissioner Dan Halem threatening that an attempt to play without an agreement could lead players to block any attempt to expand the playoffs and deny consent to neutral-site games in the postseason.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL:
The WNBA proposed starting its delayed season in a single Florida location, a person with knowledge of discussions told The Washington Post. The plan calls for 22 games at the IMG Academy in Bradenton. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the proposal is unofficial. The WNBA declined to comment. The proposal includes a start date of July 24 with playoffs in October. A shortened training camp likely would be in July.
HORSE RACING:
Kameko upset the odds to beat Pinatubo 10-1 and win the 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket, England, giving jockey Oisin Murphy his first Classic. Pinatubo entered unbeaten in six juvenile starts and with the highest 2-year-old rating for 25 years. But the 5-6 prerace favorite finished third behind 15-2 shot Wichita.
