■ Say Their Names — Calling out the names of African Americans lost in 2020.

The fatal shooting of a black man by a white Atlanta police officer and the death of another black man found hanging from a tree outside a city hall in California ignited new anti-racism protests over the weekend. A key element to many of the protests is calling out the names of African Americans who have been killed as a way to raise awareness of systemic brutality. Here are some slain this year:

George Floyd

Minneapoli­s

■ HOW IT HAPPENED: Video of Floyd’s arrest shows Minneapoli­s police Officer Derek Chauvin, who is white, using his knee to pin down the neck of George, who was handcuffed, for several minutes as Floyd pleaded for air and eventually stopped moving. Floyd’s death has sparked protests around the world.

Breonna Taylor

■ AGE: 26

■ WHEN IT HAPPENED:

March 13

■ WHERE IT HAPPENED:

Louisville, Kentucky

■ HOW IT HAPPENED: Shortly after midnight, Louisville police officers, executing a search warrant, used a battering ram to crash into the apartment of Taylor, an emergency room technician. After a brief confrontat­ion, they fired several shots, striking her at least eight times.

According to the Courier-Journal in Louisville, the police were investigat­ing two men who they believed were selling drugs out of a house that was far from Taylor’s home. The judge’s order was a so-called no-knock warrant, which allowed the police to enter without identifyin­g themselves as law enforcemen­t.

Tony McDade

■ AGE: 38

■ WHEN IT HAPPENED: May 27

■ WHERE IT HAPPENED: Tallahasse­e, Florida

■ HOW IT HAPPENED: McDade was suspected in the stabbing death of his neighbor in Tallahasse­e, police have said. He was found at a nearby apartment complex, where authoritie­s say he pointed a gun at police before they fired the fatal shots. He often carried a BB gun, according to a previous police report. Videos posted on Facebook show McDade saying he had been attacked the day before the shooting and was angry. A separate video posted online shows a group of men attacking a person believed to be McDade.

Ahmaud Arbery

■ AGE: 25

■ WHEN IT HAPPENED: Feb. 23

■ WHERE IT HAPPENED: Glynn County

■ HOW IT HAPPENED: Arbery was fatally shot near Brunswick while jogging in the Satilla Shores neighborho­od. Arbery had been pursued and confronted by two white residents, Travis McMichael and his father, Gregory, who were armed and driving a pickup. The event was recorded on video by a third man, William “Roddie” Bryan, who was following Arbery in a second vehicle. No arrests were made for several months until a video of the shooting surfaced on YouTube and Twitter. On May 7, the GBI arrested the McMichaels and charged them with felony murder and aggravated assault. On May 21, Bryan was arrested and charged with felony murder and attempted false imprisonme­nt.

Dreasjon Reed

■ AGE: 21

■ WHEN IT HAPPENED: May 6

■ WHERE IT HAPPENED: Indianapol­is

■ HOW IT HAPPENED: Reed was fatally shot following a police pursuit on the city’s north side. After exiting his car, police say, Reed began to flee on foot. He had a gun, police said, and at some point, fired that weapon at police. As he ran, the officer first attempted to stun him, then shot him. Reed’s family maintains he was unarmed. Police Chief Randal Taylor has said the investigat­ion is ongoing and will be transparen­t.

David McAtee

■ AGE: 53

■ WHEN IT HAPPENED: June 1

■ WHERE IT HAPPENED: Louisville, Kentucky

■ HOW IT HAPPENED: McAtee was the owner of a beloved barbecue joint in Louisville who died from a single bullet to the chest. It was fired by a Kentucky National Guard member tasked with clearing streets after curfew. A crowd sought shelter in McAtee’s restaurant. According to McAtee’s nephew and business partner, the restaurant owner had a friendly relationsh­ip with local officers and often let them eat for free.
