United player tests positive
Unnamed starter was asymptomatic, has been in isolation since result.
An Atlanta United first-team player tested positive for COVID19, the team announced Thursday. The name of the player was not released.
The positive result was confirmed Thursday following mandatory club testing, and no additional staff or players received a positive result, according to the club.
Atlanta United said the player was asymptomatic and has been observing isolation protocols since receiving the result. Atlanta United said medical staff continue to work directly with local infectious disease specialists to treat the player.
The team also said club personnel who have been reporting to the Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Training Ground were informed of the positive result immediately. The team will conduct testing this morning prior to resuming training in adherence with MLS health and safety protocols.
Atlanta United began individual workouts May 6 with restrictions. MLS announced clubs could return to full team workouts June 4 as it prepares for a resumption of the season.
On June 10, MLS announced it will return to play with a tournament in Orlando. All 26 teams will compete from July 8 through Aug. 11 at Walt Disney World with safety protocols in place. The league hopes to continue the regular season after the MLS is Back Tournament. MLS halted the season March 12 because of the coronavirus pandemic. Atlanta United was 2-0 at the time.
Atlanta United said it will continue to work in close consultation with the CDC, local health authorities and MLS regarding testing and training guidelines.
