Teen gets crafty to help health care workers' ears

In the midst of the coronavirus pandemic it’s heartwarming to see the many organizations and nonprofits that are stepping up to try to help our community, but individuals can make a huge impact, too.

Aditi Mohan, a rising junior at Chattahoochee High School, discovered this firsthand.

“Health care workers have always inspired me for their dedication to keeping the public safe and during the pandemic my respect for them increased tenfold for their fortitude and courage. One day, I read that after wearing masks for many hours, health care work- ers’ ears become very irritated,” said Mohan. “I looked into what could be done to help, and I found ear savers, which alleviate ear pain by shifting the loops of the mask onto the buttons of the ear savers.”

Mohan crochets ear savers while she’s watching TV.

“I have donated ear savers to Georgia Clinic, Emory (Uni- versity) Hospital, Northside Hospital, Eastside Hospital, University of Miami Hospital, Jackson Memorial Hospital and Ronald McDonald House,” she said.

Mohan is a member of Student Leadership Johns Creek and a Girl Scout Ambassador. She credits the Girl Scout Law as being part of the inspiration for her project, because it taught her to be considerate and caring and to try to make the world a better place

“Health care workers are working long shifts, are unable to spend time with their families, and in some cases are sacrificing their health to help the public during this crisis,” said Mohan. “I think it is crucial to honor and appreciate them and being able to provide health care workers some comfort is a priv- ilege.”

Recently Mohan expanded her project by partnering with a nonprofit called Raah. Some of Raah’s members are now contributing ear savers for donation to health care workers.
