THE HOT CORNER
1 PRO FOOTBALL:
The Washington Redskins are removing former owner George Preston Marshall from their Ring of Fame and striking all references to him on their website. A spokesman confirmed the decisions Wednesday, saying Marshall’s name has already been removed from the history wall at the team’s training facility in Ashburn, Virginia.
2 PRO HOCKEY:
Flyers forward Oskar Lindblom skated with the team Tuesday in one of the few times he’s hit the ice since he was diagnosed with a rare form of bone cancer. The 23-year-old Lindblom, a native of Sweden, has been ruled out of play should the NHL season resume. Lindblom said he was down to his final chemotherapy treatments.
3 PRO BASKETBALL:
William Wesley, known for his connections throughout basketball, has joined the New York Knicks as executive vice president/senior basketball adviser. A decision on a coach could be next, with the Knicks hoping to make the hire by the end of July.
4 PRO FOOTBALL:
Multiple individuals defrauded in a scheme perpetrated by ex-Ohio State and NFL quarterback Art Schlichter and his accomplice should receive money from the former player’s share of a national concussion settlement, an Ohio prosecutor is arguing. Schlichter, now serving a nearly 11-year sentence on federal fraud charges, has received nearly $700,000 from a national settlement with the NFL over concussions.
5 PRO TENNIS:
Players in Australia will have a chance to compete for prize money for the first time since March in a UTR pro series starting this weekend in Sydney and continuing across the country. Top-ranked Ash Barty is unlikely to compete, concentrating instead on practice. Former U.S. Open champion Sam Stosur is reportedly ready to join the series.
