Most years, multiple cities in Gwinnett County and the Mall of Georgia host Fourth of July celebrations complete with fireworks and entertainment. This year, because of the coronavirus pandemic, all of those annual events have been canceled or post- poned.

Duluth, Lawrenceville, Sugar Hill and Norcross typically hold Independence

Day celebrations on July 3, and the Mall of Georgia, Lilburn, Snellville and Braselton have their events on the hol- iday itself.

Lilburn has postponed its event to November, and Braselton will hold its Independence Day fireworks and festival on Sept. 5. Others have either canceled their events completely or are contemplating whether they can be held at a later date.

Lawrenceville, Duluth and Suwanee jointly agreed to cancel public events through July 10 in early May and said they’d reevaluate what could be rescheduled at a later date. Suwanee did not have a July Fourth celebration planned, but Lawrenceville and Duluth typically hold events in their downtown areas. Snellville, Norcross, Sugar Hill and the Mall of Georgia have all canceled this year’s events but hope to hold them again in 2021.

These events have been postponed and canceled primarily because large crowds and close contact with others can increase the risk of spreading coronavirus, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Cities have cited this guidance when canceling their July Fourth celebrations and other public events.
