Seattle shooting: One man was killed and a teenager was wounded early Monday in Seattle’s “occupied” protest zone. The violence that came just over a week after another shooting in the zone left one person dead and another wounded was “dangerous and unacceptab­le,” police Chief Carmen Best said.

Police budget cut: The police budget in New York City would be slashed by $1 billion under a proposal announced Monday by Mayor Bill de Blasio. The mayor said the New York Police Department had found ways to find the cuts from its current $6 billion budget that would open up more funding for community programs.

Ferry disaster: At least 32 people, including three children, drowned Monday after the passenger boat they were on collided with a ferry and capsized in Dhaka, Bangladesh. The capsized ship, called the Morning Bird, had just completed an hourlong journey to the Sadarghat river port in the city of Dhaka when it collided with the other vessel, officials said.

Assange hearing : A British judge said Monday that WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange must attend his next court hearing July 27 unless he can provide medical evidence for his absence. Lawyers for Assange said he could not attend the latest hearing on his U.S. extraditio­n case by video link from prison for medical reasons.

Poland runoff: Poland’s President Andrzej Duda promised Monday to protect traditiona­l Polish values against LGBT rights after a first-round presidenti­al election that gave him the most votes but forced him into a runoff. Nearly complete results from Sunday’s balloting show that Duda, who is backed by the populist ruling Law and Justice party, won nearly 44% of the votes.
