BASEBALL:
Indians outfielder Delino DeShields, who attended Woodward Academy, has tested positive for COVID-19, according to president of baseball operations Chris Antonetti. DeShields is said to be experiencing mild symptoms, including the loss of taste and smell, but is generally doing well, according to Antonetti.
SOCCER:
The winner of the Swiss Cup will be denied a traditional entry into the Europa League because of an overcrowded schedule caused by the coronavirus pandemic, the country’s soccer association said Friday. The Swiss Cup, which was stopped at the quarterfinal stage, will not resume until after the Aug. 3 entry deadline set by UEFA for next season’s Champions League and Europa League.
AUTO RACING:
Formula One world champion Lewis Hamilton posted the fastest time on Friday in the first practice for the seasonopening Austrian Grand Prix. The British driver was .356 seconds ahead of his Mercedes teammate, Valtteri Bottas, on the 2.7-mile Red Bull Ring circuit in Spielberg nestled at the foot of the Styrian mountains in southern Austria.
SOCCER:
Bayern Munich finally ended its long pursuit of Leroy Sané on Friday, signing the German winger from Manchester City to a five-year contract. The German club said the 24-year-old former Schalke player agreed to a deal and will start preparing for the upcoming season next week.
COLLEGE FOOTBALL:
Austin Peay coach Mark Hudspeth has resigned after one season on the job that included him taking the Governors to a program-record 11 wins and a trip to the FCS quarterfinals. Athletic Director Gerald Harrison announced Hudspeth’s resignation Friday. Hudspeth said in a statement that it was a personal decision.
