Indians outfielder Delino DeShields, who attended Woodward Academy, has tested positive for COVID-19, according to president of baseball operations Chris Antonetti. DeShields is said to be experienci­ng mild symptoms, including the loss of taste and smell, but is generally doing well, according to Antonetti.

SOCCER:

The winner of the Swiss Cup will be denied a traditiona­l entry into the Europa League because of an overcrowde­d schedule caused by the coronaviru­s pandemic, the country’s soccer associatio­n said Friday. The Swiss Cup, which was stopped at the quarterfin­al stage, will not resume until after the Aug. 3 entry deadline set by UEFA for next season’s Champions League and Europa League.

AUTO RACING:

Formula One world champion Lewis Hamilton posted the fastest time on Friday in the first practice for the seasonopen­ing Austrian Grand Prix. The British driver was .356 seconds ahead of his Mercedes teammate, Valtteri Bottas, on the 2.7-mile Red Bull Ring circuit in Spielberg nestled at the foot of the Styrian mountains in southern Austria.

SOCCER:

Bayern Munich finally ended its long pursuit of Leroy Sané on Friday, signing the German winger from Manchester City to a five-year contract. The German club said the 24-year-old former Schalke player agreed to a deal and will start preparing for the upcoming season next week.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL:

Austin Peay coach Mark Hudspeth has resigned after one season on the job that included him taking the Governors to a program-record 11 wins and a trip to the FCS quarterfin­als. Athletic Director Gerald Harrison announced Hudspeth’s resignatio­n Friday. Hudspeth said in a statement that it was a personal decision.
