Court audio system for hard of hearing OK’d
The Milton City Council has approved spending $4,275 to install a special audio system in the new Public Safety Complex to serve hard-of-hearing residents attending Municipal Court.
BIS Digital, a contractor that records all court sessions, will install a listening assist system that complies with 2010 revised regulations of the federal Americans With Disabilities Act, according to an agenda memo to the council by Court Clerk Brooke Lappin.
“This system will provide the court with the ability to dispense headphones to the public that will relay any audio from the AV system in the courtroom,” Lappin said. “The system will also allow individuals to utilize their iPhone and/ or Android device to amplify that audio.”
Additionally, BIS will upgrade current software to capture audio from ZOOM meeting recordings so virtual court sessions can be held, Lappin said. eligible senior citizens.
The purchase will be reimbursed out of $100,654 provided to Cherokee County Senior Services for meals to seniors 60 years old and older. The funds are from the federal Family First Act in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The grant requires no matching funds from the county, staff said in a report to commissioners.
“SERV is a nonprofit organization with headquarters in Cherokee County that is qualified to support the county in meeting the requirements of the grant to provide nutritional services,” staff said. “The total cost per food box is $70.”
Food will be delivered during the next four months to seniors sheltering in place as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. Eligibility requirements are set by the Atlanta Regional Commission.
