Jamie Baldwin, the head coach of Rockdale County’s football and track and field teams, died Saturday, the school’s sports Twitter account posted. He was 45.

Baldwin had been suffering from bronchitis for the past week, according to the Rockdale Citizen.

Baldwin was an Alabama native who was a four-sport athlete at Clarke County High. He joined the Army out of high school and served in Operation Desert Storm. Baldwin was stationed in Savannah for a time, got a degree at Armstrong State University and transitioned into teaching and coaching.

In 2012, Baldwin made a mark at Johnson High of Savannah, where as head coach he led the 53-yearold school to its first and only football playoff victory. Baldwin came to Rockdale County as a defensive coordinator and was promoted to head coach in 2017.

Rockdale’s three high schools were the last in metro Atlanta to return to summer conditioning last week because of the school district’s COVID-19 concerns. Rockdale High’s Monday workouts were canceled.
