Lewis set an example for politicians on left and right
I woke up this morning with a sense of sadness remembering John Lewis is gone. Our country lost one of its last true statesmen, a leader with integrity who put the American people first. Too many of today’s politicians don’t have that kind of morality and ethics. Our elected representatives seem more interested in being elected than in serving the best interests of the people who put them there. There was a time when so many of our officeholders served with dignity and commitment. Today, our political parties rarely find common ground. With all of the problems we face today, how can it be that our politicians cannot agree on a course of action for any of them? The example they are setting for our children is sadly pathetic. So, the passing of John Lewis, the beacon of hope and integrity in Congress, leaves me sad and more than a little frightened for our future.

About the Opinion page:
The AJC recognizes the diversity and differences of opinion among our readership, and we strive to accommodate this reality by regularly offering insights that point toward solutions for problems facing us today. Part of this work is regularly offering both conservative and liberal opinion voices as well. And we recognize the variety of opinions even within the same side of the political aisle, and hope you do too. For example, some of our liberal writers have been critical of the Clintons or former President Obama — much as some of our conservative columnists take to task President Donald Trump. We’re constantly looking at how best to bring you a variety of viewpoints because we recognize the importance of balance on our Opinion pages – both between and within conservative and liberal ranks.
