The Madrid Open has been advised by local health authorities in the Spanish capital to not hold the rescheduled event in September due to the resurgence of the coronavirus in Spain. The tournament organizers said Saturday that they had requested an evaluation of the health situation in the city and that regional health officials “advised not to stage the tournament due to the current trend of COVID-19 cases.”
PRO GOLF:
Kyle Stanley had another eagle in a 14-point round Friday to take the lead into the weekend in the Barracuda Championship, the PGA Tour’s lone modified Stableford scoring event. Stanley had a 22-point total for a two-stroke lead over Matthias Schwab, Robert Streb and Branden Grace in high altitude at Tahoe Mountain Club in Truckee, California.
OBITUARY:
Louisiana-Lafayette assistant football coach and former Mississippi State player D.J. Looney died from a heart attack following a team workout Saturday morning at Cajun Field, university officials said. Looney, who was 31, was entering his third season on the Ragin’ Cajuns staff and coached the offensive line, a position he played for Mississippi State from 2007 to 2010.
AUTO RACING:
Drag racing great John Force and his four-car NHRA team are remaining parked for the rest of the 2020 season. John Force Racing announced Friday it won’t compete in any of the final 12 events this year, citing sponsorship issues and making a financial decision to “live to fight another day.”
COLLEGE BASKETBALL:
Illinois star Ayo Dosunmu plans to return for his junior season rather than turn pro. The first-team, all-Big Ten guard said in a Twitter video posted Friday playing in the NBA is his dream.“But first, I need that national championship,” he added.
