Five-run eighth inning powers comeback win

-

In the most dramatic victory on the early season, the Braves (5-3) scored five runs in the eighth inning to defeat in the Mets at Truist Park on Friday night. Here is a quick recap:

The details

The Mets led 8-2 after a six-run top of the fifth inning. The Braves trailed 10-6 headed into the eighth. Travis d’Arnuad delivered the biggest hit of the rally with a bases-loaded double that scored three runs and put the Braves back in front.

At the plate

D’Arnaud finished 3 for 4 with five RBIs for the Braves. Dansby Swanson had two hits and two RBIs. The shortstop has hit in all eight games this season and is tied with the Twins’ Nelson Cruz with a major league-leading 11 RBIs.

On the mound

Sean Newcomb and Jhoulys Chacin combined to allow 10 earned runs, with most of the damage done in the Mets’ six-run fifth. Tyler Matzek, Grant Dayton and Chris Martin pitched the final 3⅓ innings, allowing just two hits. Dayton got the win and Martin got save.

Notable

■ Newcomb was charged six earned runs over his 4⅓ innings, increasing his ERA to 8.22 through two starts, both against the Mets.

■ D’Arnaud stole a base in the fourth inning, the second of his career and first since 2014.

■ Matt Adams has six RBIs in seven games as a late addition to the roster.

Quotable

“You go from sitting in a dentist chair, waiting for them to hit a nerve, to being besides yourself. These guys continue to amaze me. How they’re never out of a game, they just keep coming back.”

— Manager Brian Snitker, trying to summarize emotions throughout the game.
