1 COLLEGE FOOTBALL: Mississipp­i center Eli Johnson says he won’t play this season and will instead focus on completing his master’s degree in criminal justice. The SEC allows players to opt out of the season because of COVID-19 and remain on scholarshi­p. Johnson started all 12 games last season, allowing only one sack. His father, David, was hospitaliz­ed this summer because of the virus.

2 COLLEGE FOOTBALL: Alabama announced it will allow about 20% capacity for home games this season, with seating set up to allow social distancing.

3 PRO SOCCER: Ángel Di María scored one goal and set up two as Paris Saint-Germain beat Leipzig 3-0 in Lisbon, Portugal, to reach the Champions League final for the first time. Marquinhos and Juan Bernat also scored.

SOCCER: FIFA created a new 4 window for national team games in the middle of Europe’s 20212022 season to catch up on fixtures that were postponed during the pandemic. FIFA updated its calendar with fixture slots on Jan. 24-Feb. 1, 2022 for all confederat­ions except UEFA to replace games originally scheduled next month.

5 WOMEN’S COLLEGE

BASKETBALL: Texas Tech announced that Krista Gerlich, a former Lady Raiders assistant coach and player who helped the program win its only national championsh­ip in 1993, will be the team’s new head coach. Gerlich has been head coach at UTArlingto­n the past seven seasons, where her 121 victories are the most in program history.

6 AUTO RACING: Ferrari and McLaren became the first teams to confirm they’ve signed the new Concorde Agreement on the future of Formula One racing. The agreement will cover the 2021 through 2025 seasons and follows years of negotiatio­n on the sport’s commercial side.
