Family experienced problems with absentee voting
The media and both political parties are obsessed with mail absentee voting, so I thought I would report on my recent experience. During the August 11 primary runoff election, I mailed my wife’s ballot and mine at the same time, July 24. The Secretary of State web site showed my wife’s ballot was received July 27 and marked “Accepted.” I assume hers therefore was counted, but I have no way of verifying that. My ballot, however, shows blank in the “received” section, and my vote therefore was not accepted or counted. I have no way of knowing what happened to the ballot. Our votes are too important to allow others to have access to them. My advice is, if you want to ensure your vote counts, vote in person, and personally insert your ballot into the reader and see that it is counted. There is plenty of time for early voting with appropriate social distancing to avoid Election Day crowds, long lines and COVID-19.

About the Opinion page:
The AJC recognizes the diversity and differences of opinion among our readership, and we strive to accommodate this reality by regularly offering insights that point toward solutions for problems facing us today. Part of this work is regularly offering both conservative and liberal opinion voices as well. And we recognize the variety of opinions even within the same side of the political aisle, and hope you do too. For example, some of our liberal writers have been critical of the Clintons or former President Obama — much as some of our conservative columnists take to task President Donald Trump. We’re constantly looking at how best to bring you a variety of viewpoints because we recognize the importance of balance on our Opinion pages – both between and within conservative and liberal ranks.
