10-run inning early on boosts Braves in slugfest
The Braves scored 10 runs in the second inning, chasing Phillies ace Jake Arrieta after just four outs and 46 pitches, but still had to hold on to a narrow victory.
The details
The Braves sent 13 men to the plate in the second inning with all nine in the lineup scoring a run. Austin Riley had a double, home run and three RBIs in the frame. The Phillies had a big inning of their own, scoring six runs in the third. The Phillies pulled to within a run, 11-10, with two runs in the eighth. The Braves added a run in the ninth on a Dansby Swanson home run for insurance. Mark Melancon got all three Phillies in the ninth, with the help of a double play, to get the save.
At the plate
Every Braves starter had at least one hit. Marcell Ozuna and Nick Markakis each went 3-for-5 with two RBIs.
On the mound
Tommy Milone, acquired earlier in the day in a trade with the Orioles, started. He lasted just 2⅓ innings, giving up eight hits and seven earned runs. A.J. Minter was credited with the win.
Notable
■ Ronald Acuna left the game as a precaution with right hamstring tightness.
■ Melancon earned his sixth save of the season and 200th of his career. He’s the seventh active major leaguer to reach that mark, joining Craig Kimbrel, Fernando Rodney, Kenley Jansen, Aroldis Chapman, Joakim Soria and Greg Holland.
■ Through Sunday, the Braves were the only National League East team with a winning record (19-14).
Quotable
“I knew when we scored 10 that early in the game, that it had a really good chance of being (a crazy game). That’s too much ground (innings) to cover in a ballpark like this. I’d rather score runs like that in the seventh inning when you don’t have that many outs to cover, because I’ve been on the other end of that and won games like that also.”
