COLLEGE FOOTBALL:

Wake Forest says it will open the football and fall sports season with no fans in attendance at home competitio­ns because of the coronaviru­s pandemic. Fellow instate ACC schools Duke, North Carolina and N.C. State have all said they will open the fall without fans in attendance at home events . ... Virginia Tech and the town of Blacksburg say tailgating will be prohibited in university and town-owned parking areas . ... The University of Kansas also will begin fall sports without home fans in attendance.

PRO HOCKEY:

The Tampa Bay Lightning are back in the Eastern Conference finals of the Stanley Cup playoffs for the fourth time in six years. Victor Hedman’s goal with just under six minutes remaining in the second overtime gave the Lightning a 3-2 victory, ending their second-round playoff series against Boston in five games Monday night . ... Pierre-Edouard Bellemare began a five-goal scoring spree in the first period and the Colorado Avalanche avoided second-round eliminatio­n with a 6-3 victory over Dallas on Monday night. The Avalanche trail 3-2 in the best-ofseven series.

PRO SOCCER:

Former U.S. and Premier League goalkeeper Tim Howard is returning to NBC as a studio analyst when its coverage of England’s top division begins next week. Howard did occasional game analysis during NBC’s first three seasons of the Premier League.

TRACK AND FIELD:

The Russian Athletics Federation submitted a draft anti-doping reform plan to World Athletics, the latest step it had to follow to avoid being expelled by the sport’s governing body. The Russians were on the brink of expulsion after missing a July 1 deadline to pay World Athletics $6.3 million in a fine and other costs but were reprieved when the Russian sports ministry provided the funds six weeks later.
