GOLF:

John Catlin became the first American since Tiger Woods to win at Valderrama, surviving conditions so difficult that he didn’t make a birdie in his 4-over 75 and held on for a one-shot victory in the Andalucia Masters in Sotogrande, Spain. Catlin won for the first time on the European Tour and denied Martin Kaymer another chance to end a six-year drought. Kaymer has gone 156 events since his last victory in the 2014 U.S. Open.

BASKETBALL:

David “Smokey” Gaines, the former Harlem Globetrott­er and ABA player who coached at Detroit-Mercy and San Diego State, has died. Gaines died Saturday at 80 of cancer, his family said. He also contracted COVID-19, The Detroit News reported. A star guard in high school, the Detroit native was an All-State selection in 1959 and went on to star at LeMoyne-Owen College in Tennessee. He was a member of the Globetrott­ers from 1963-67 and also played briefly for the Kentucky Colonels of the American Basketball Associatio­n before turning to coaching.

HOCKEY:

Tampa Bay Lightning coach Jon Cooper ruled out captain Steven Stamkos from playing in the East finals series against the New York Islanders. Cooper did not provide any other details, but Stamkos has been out since having surgery for a core muscle injury on March 2.

PRO FOOTBALL:

Quarterbac­k Alex Smith made Washington’s initial 53-man roster as a backup after final cuts, another step in his remarkable comeback 22 months since breaking his right leg.

PRO BASKETBALL:

Reigning NBA MVP Giannis Antetokoun­mpo of Milwaukee left Sunday’s Game

4 of the East semifinal series against Miami after appearing to aggravate a sprained right ankle. He didn’t return. The Bucks went on to win in overtime 118-115, bringing the series to 3-1 after facing eliminatio­n.
