Census Bureau stops layoffs: Two days after a federal judge ordered the U.S. Census Bureau to stop winding down 2020 census operations for the time being, the statistical agency said Tuesday in court papers that it’s refraining from laying off some census takers and it’s restoring some qualitycontrol steps.

India, China trade accusations: India and China accused each other on Tuesday of making provocative military moves and firing warning shots along their disputed border despite talks on ending the escalating tensions. China said Indian forces on Monday crossed into territory it holds and fired warning shots at a Chinese patrol in what it called a violation of their agreements. India denied that and said Chinese soldiers tried to surround one of its forward posts in a “grave provocation” and also fired warning shots.

Australian journalists flee
China: Two Australian journalists have rushed out of China after a five-day diplomatic standoff that began when Chinese state security officers made unannounced visits, prompting fears that they would be detained. Michael Smith, the China correspondent for The Australian Financial Review, and Bill Birtles, a correspondent with the Australian Broadcasting Corp., arrived in Sydney on Tuesday morning after their organizations hastily arranged flights.

British woman faces fresh
charges: A British-Iranian woman held for years in Iran after being detained in 2016 while visiting family is set to face additional charges, Iranian state television announced Tuesday, a move that could deepen the diplomatic impasse in the case. The woman, Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe, 41, was sentenced to five years in prison after Iranian authorities accused her of plotting to overthrow Iran’s government — charges that she, her family and international rights groups have denied.
