PRO GOLF:
Adrian Otaegui started his round with three straight birdies and then just kept going, shooting a 10-under 62 Thursday to take a three-shot lead after the first round of the Scottish Championship. The Spaniard finished with 10 birdies in a flawless round at the inaugural event, which was added to the European Tour as part of a reshaped 2020 international schedule disrupted by the pandemic.
TENNIS:
Albert Ramos-Vinolas became the only seeded player to reach the quarterfinals of the Forte Village Sardegna Open in Sardinia, Italy, with a 6-0, 6-3 victory over Corentin Moutet on Thursday. The fourth-seeded Ramos-Vinolas, of Spain, next faces Italian Marco Cecchinato, who beat seventhseeded Tommy Paul of the United States 7-6 (1), 6-4.
MARATHONS:
Former London Marathon winner Daniel Wanjiru of Kenya has been banned for four years for doping. The Athletics Integrity Unit said it was “highly likely” that Wanjiru used prohibited substances, citing abnormalities in his biological passport. Wanjiru won the London Marathon in 2017 and the Amsterdam Marathon in 2016.
SOCCER:
FIFA investigators extended their case Thursday against Haitian soccer officials suspected of systematic sexual abuse of young female players. A fourth Haitian soccer federation official was suspended for 90 days. A final investigation report and files in the case against longtime federation president Yves Jean-Bart were also sent to FIFA. Jean-Bart is suspected of sexually abusing women who trained with Haiti’s national teams. He has denied allegations that were published by British newspaper The Guardian.
HIGH SCHOOLS:
The organization overseeing Alaska high school competitions has canceled state championship events for all fall activities because of increased coronavirus cases.
