1 SKIING: Lucas Braathen upset the favorites to clinch his first career win at the season-opening men’s World Cup giant slalom in Soelden, Austria. The Norwegian was fifth before posting the secondfast­est time in the decisive leg to finish ahead of Swiss duo Marco Odermatt and Gino Caviezel. Odermatt, the fastest racer in the second run, was five hundredths behind, and Caviezel, who led after the opening run, trailed by 0.46.

2 MOTOR SPORTS: Alex Rins held off a late charge by Alex Marquez to win the Aragon MotoGP in Alcaniz, Spain. Rins, who began 10th on the grid, finished 0.263 seconds in front of Marquez, who started 11th. Marquez, brother of six-time MotoGP champion Marc Marquez, was coming off another second-place finish at Le Mans a week ago. Joan Mir finished third to close out the all-Spanish podium and take over the points lead from Fabio Quartararo,

3 CYCLING: Tao Geoghegan Hart sprinted to victory at the end of the mountainou­s 15th stage of the Giro d’Italia in Piancavall­o, and Joao Almeida held onto the overall leader’s pink jersey but saw his advantage slashed. Geoghegan Hart, a British rider with the Ineos Grenadiers team, was part of a trio of riders to reach the summit finish together, and he edged out Team Sunweb pair Wilco Kelderman and Jai Hindley.

4 SOCCER: Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk will have surgery on his right knee after damaging ligaments in a challenge by Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, and the team said he may be out for a long period.

5 CYCLING: Dutchman Mathieu van der Poel beat Belgian rider Wout van Aert in a photo finish in Oudenaarde, Belgium, to win the Tour of Flanders for the first time, while contender Julian Alaphilipp­e crashed out near the end after hitting a motorbike. Van der Poel won by less than half a wheel’s length in the final sprint.
