3 PROFOOTBAL­L: Bill Mathis, a versatile running backa nd an original member of the Jets franchise, died. Hewas81. The team announced Mathis’ death Wednesday night. Therewas no cause ofdeath given, but Mathis had long been dealing with several health issues. He rushed for3,589 yards and 37TDs in 10 seasons, and caught 149 passes for1,775 yards and nine scores.

4 COLLEGEBAS­KETBALL: Penn State’s Pat Chambers has resigned following an internal investigat­ion into allegation­s of inappropri­ate conduct by the Nittany Lions coach. Chambers, 49, had been at the school for nine years andwas coming off the team’s best season under his direction.

5 PROFOOTBAL­L: Former Raiders offensive lineman Mario Henderson has died. Hewas 35. The team announced Henderson’s death Wednesday. Therewas no cause ofdeath given. Henderson joined the Raiders indraft- day trade after being picked in the thirdround by the New England Patriots after his college career at Florida State. He played four seasons in Oakland, starting28 games.
