GOLF: Kevin Sutherland and Paul Broadhurst fought darkness through six play off holes Sunday , neither able tomake a putt to end the Charles Schwab Cup Championship. When they returned to Phoenix Country Club on Monday morning, they faceda different challenge: the crisp desert air. Figuring the ball wouldn’t fly as far, Sutherland made the proper adjustment, hitting a 7- iron on thepar- 417th hole to 4 feet. Sutherland made the putt, ending the final PGA Tour Champions event of the year after nine playoff holes.
BASEBALL: Former Astros GM Jeff Luhnow filed abreach of contract lawsuit against the team, seeking more than$ 22million in salary owed under his deal when he was fired in January. The suit, filed in Harris County District Court in Houston, claims Luhnow was unaware a camera was used to steal signs during the team’s run to the 2017 World Series title, which baseball Commissioner Rob Man fred found violated rules. L uh now and manager AJ Hinch were suspended for the season last Jan. 13 by Manfred and fired by the Astros later that day.
OLYMPICS: Olympic federations have shared concerns about completing qualifying events for the Tokyo Games during the pandemic. World Rowing official Matt Smith said during an online meeting of the Association of Summer Olympic International Federations that “it is really getting urgent thatwe start to make decisions.” About57% of more than 11,000 places in the Tokyo Olympics hadbeen secured in March when the games were postponed, but many of the 33sports nowhave challenges staging international events.
HORSERACING: Authentic, winner of the Kentucky Derby and Breeders’ Cup Classic, has been retired to stud. The 3- year- old colt will stand at Spendthrift Farmin Lexington, Kentucky, next year for a breeding fee of$ 75,000.
