- — Jake Russell, Washington Post

A reliever with a3.29 ERA received avote for NLMV Pin place ofa position player wholed MLB in hits andwas amongthe game’s topfive in batting average, runs, triples and total bases.

That’s because long time St. Louis Post-Dispatch writer Rick Hum mel accidentally cast his 10th-place NL MVP vote for Chicago Cubs reliever Ryan Te per a instead of Washington Nationals short stop T rea Turner.

Hum mel told NBC Sports Chicago that Tepera appeared three names above Turner’s in the electronic drop-down menu used to submit ballots and that he accidentally selected sixth-year pitcher.

Theveteran scribe was just as shocked as anyone to see who received his final vote.

“Especially for somebody voting 40years on this, thatwould be a stunning development ,” Hum mel said .“People would think I’ve lost my marbles.”

Hummel, 74, was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame as the 2006 winner of the J.G. Taylor Spink Award.

Even though his gaffe raised eyebrows in the industry, it didn’t change the final results. Turner still finished firmly in seventh place in NLMVP voting, trailing Atlanta Braves outfielder Mar cell Oz una by 84 points and placing ahead of San Francisco Giants outfielder Mike Ya strz em ski by two points.

“TreaTurner should have one more point. He’s a good player,” Hummel said.“I’m sure the Tepera family is delighted, but there’s no way Iwould have voted for him. It was an accident.”

“Oneman’s mistake is another man’s claim to an NLMVP vote,” Tepera tweeted. “Thanks Rick! Honoredby the vote.”
