■Kentucky QB Wilson’ s three touchdowns help Wildcats withstand Vandy’s late rally,

-

Kentucky quarterback Terry Wilson accounted for three touchdowns, and Chris Rodriguez rushed for two scores including a 74-yarder before the Wildcats withstood Vanderbilt’s late rally to win 38-35 Saturday and end a two-game losing streak.

Rested from a bye and with Wilson back from a one-game absence because of a wrist injury, the Wildcats (3-4, 3-4 SEC) moved the ball at will against the Commodores (0-6, 0-6) with five TDs and a field goal on its first seven possessions. Wilson sandwiched a 32-yard score in the first half between TD passes to tight ends Justin Rigg (15 yards) and Keaton Upshaw (21).

Wilson completed 13 of 15 passes for 110 yards and rushed seven times for 83. Rodriguez rushed 13 times for a career-high 149 yards with TDs of 3 and 74 yards.

Two days after Kentucky offensive line coach John Schlarman, 45, died of cancer, the Wildcats honored him multiple ways including controlling the line of scrimmage throughout. They initially lined up with just 10men and took a delay of game penalty (declined) just before left tackle Landon Young came on the field wearing Schlarman’s No. 65worn while playing for Kentucky in the mid-1990s.

Big Ten

No. 10 Indiana 24, (at) Michigan State 0: Michael Penix Jr.

threw for 320 yards and hit Ty Fry fog le for two touch down passes as No .10 Indiana remained unbeaten with an easy victory over Michigan State.

The Hoosiers (4-0, 4-0) set up a showdown next weekend against Ohio State, the only other unbeaten team in the Big Ten East.

Penix threw two interceptions in the first half, but that didn’t matter much. The Spartans (1-3, 1-3) were just as sloppy — to the pointwhere quarterback Rocky Lombardi was pulled in the second quarter.

Fryfogle had 11 catches for 200 yards — both career highs. He did most of that in the first two quarters, when all the game’s scoring occurred. (At) Nebraska 30, Penn State

23: Luke McCaffrey had a hand in two touchdowns in his first start, Nebraska’s defense made two huge late defensive stops, and the Cornhuskers held on to beat Penn State for their first win.

McCaffrey took over for Adrian Martinez, who had started all of his 23 previous games at Nebraska (1-2, 1-2) but turned in flat performances in the Cornhuskers’ first two games.

McCaffrey looked good in the first half, but the Huskers generated only three points in the second and Penn State came back from a 21-point deficit to make it close.

A Top 10 team to start the season, the Lions (0-4, 0-4) are off to their worst start since Joe Paterno’s 2001 team also opened with four straight losses.

Sean Clifford struggled again for Penn State, getting replaced by Will Levis after turning over the ball on two of the Lions’ first three possessions.

Illinois 23, (at) Rutgers 20: James McCourt overcame two long misses in the fourth quarter to hit a 47-yard field goal with three seconds left to lift Illinois past Rutgers (1-3, 1-3 Big Ten) for the Illini’s first win of the season.

While starting quarterback Brandon Peters wasmissing his third straight game following a COVID-19 test, backup Isiah Williams got the start after his quarantine ended. Hewas the fourth starting quarterback of the season for Illinois (1-3, 1-3).

Late Friday

Iowa 35 (at) Minnesota 7:

Iowa’s defense clamped down hard on Minnesota all night, coming awfully close to its first shutout in the series since 2009.

Coach P.J. Fleck called a timeout in the final seconds to try to help get the Gophers in the end zone, and Hawkeyes coach Kirk Ferentz fired back by using all three of his in a row.

That’s why it’s a rivalry, one that the Hawk eyes have owned for most of Ferentz’s 22-year tenure.

Tyler Goodson rushed for a career-high 142 yards and two touchdowns on 20 carries, and Iowa (2-2) beat Minnesota (1-3) to keep the Floyd of Rosedale trophy for a sixth straight season.
