1 Transgender pioneer dies: Jan Morris, the celebrated journalist, historian, world traveler and fiction writer who in middle age became a pioneer of the transgender movement, died Friday in Wales, according to her literary representative, United Agents. She was 94. Morris wrote dozens of books in a variety of genres, and as a journalist for the Manchester Guardian in 1956 helped break the news that French forces were secretly attacking Egypt during the Suez Canal crisis.
2 Council member arrested: A third Cincinnati City Council member has been arrested on corruption allegations. Democrat P. G. Sittenfeld was arrested Thursday under an indictment alleging he solicited $ 40,000 in payments to his political action committee to “deliver the votes” in the City Council for a proposed downtown real estate development. Sittenfeld tweeted “I am innocent” on Friday.
3 Egypt crackdown: A crackdown by Egyptian authorities on the most prominent human rights group still operating in the country sparked condemnations of Egypt’s rights record Friday by the U. N. and global advocacy groups. This week, security forces arrested three senior staffff members of the Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights, including its executive director.
4 Commissioner resigns: Sam Randazzo, the head of the commission that regulates Ohio utilities, resigned in the wake of a widening federal bribery and racketeering scandal tied to subsidies for two struggling nuclear plants. Randazzo stepped down from his position Friday. On Thursday, the reactors’ ex- owner, Firstenergy Corp., disclosed that former top executives made an improper payment in 2019 for a consulting agreement tied to someone who was later appointed as an Ohio state regulator.
