Tigers still have something to play for
Figure out the quarterback: Jarrett Guarantano sustained a head injury in Tennessee's loss to Arkansas two weeks ago, but he had an unexpected off- week to rest and recuperate. In his stead, Brian Maurer entered the game and failed to complete on his first four passes. Freshman Harrison Bailey was the last man up, and he threw two interceptions.
It seems like a broken record at this point to criticize the Vols' quarterback situation, but it's the team's most glaring need, one that will need to be solved before it takes the field against a staunch Auburn defense.
Halt the Tank: Tank Bigsby has already made his mark on the SEC as a freshman, as the Auburn running back already ranks in the top 10 in rushing yards ( 503) and touchdowns ( 5). Tennessee's defense has played well so far, hampered by the inept offense, but it has been susceptible to talented running backs. The Vols are allowing just over 160 yards on the ground to opponents, though they have yet to allow a 100- yard rusher. As it has all season, though, Auburn will rely on Bigsby and Tennessee needs to be ready.
Keys for Auburn
Apply pressure: No matter who Tennessee trots out at quarterback, Auburn needs to be sure to make him as uncomfortable as possible. Thus far, the Tigers' pass rush has been average, ranking seventh in the SEC with 12 total sacks. Zakoby Mcclain and Owen Pappoe each have two. Once thought of as one of the best units in the nation, Tennessee's offensive line has been disappointing, allowing 13 sacks, which makes for an enticing matchup for Auburn.
Play the middle: Tennessee's most glaring weakness, defensively, has been defending passes in the middle of the field. All year, teams have been able to cash in huge chunks of yardage on simple slant plays or burn Vol defensive backs deep with post routes. With dynamic players like Anthony Schwartz and Seth Williams, Auburn could have a field day in that area of the field.
Score predictions
Auburn 24, Tennessee 10: Neither offense in this game has set the world on fire, but Auburn is still ( technically) in contention for the SEC West, while Tennessee has little to play for. The Vols look like they've already scrapped this season, so the Tigers should cruise to victory.
