THE HOT CORNER
PRO SOCCER: Pedro Santos and Gyasi Zardes scored three minutes apart early in overtime and the Columbus Crew beat Nashville SC 2-0 in Ohio on Sunday to advance to the MLS Eastern Conference finals. The third-seeded Crew will host eighth-seeded New England on Sunday for a spot in the MLS Cup. The visiting Revolution beat Orlando City 3-1 Sunday, with Gustavo Bou scoring twice.
PRO SOCCER: Eden Hazard is out of Real Madrid’s Champions League match against Shakhtar Donetsk because of a right thigh injury. The club did not say how long he will be sidelined, but similar injuries usually require a few weeks of recovery time. The 13-time European champion needs to beat Shakhtar in Ukraine to secure a spot in the round of 16.
OLYMPICS: Organizers of the delayed Tokyo Olympics declined to confirm widely circulated reports in Japan that the costs of the one-year postponement will be about $3 billion. The estimates have been published in the last several days by some of Japan’s top-circulation newspapers, the national broadcaster NHK, and the Japanese news agency Kyodo. All are citing similar figures and unidentified sources close to the games. The official cost of putting on the Tokyo Games is $12.6 billion but a government audit last year said it was probably twice that much. All but $5.6 billion is public money.
AUTO RACING: Romain Grosjean was ruled out of the second Formula One race in Bahrain and will be replaced by Pietro Fittipaldi, a grandson of former F1 champion Emerson Fittipaldi, the Haas team said Monday. Grosjean was hospitalized with burns on the back of both hands after his car crashed into a barrier in the Bahrain Grand Prix on Sunday and burst into flames. Haas said it anticipated Grosjean would be discharged today. His injuries mean he can’t compete in the Sakhir Grand Prix on Sunday.
