1 COLLEGE FOOTBALL: Northwestern linebacker Paddy Fisher won the Lott IMPACT Trophy as college football’s defensive player who made the biggest impact on his team. The award, usually given in December, was delayed because of the pandemic. Fisher had 86 tackles (4½ for loss), one interception, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery in 2020 and finished his career with 404 tackles, most among active players. The other finalists were Talanoa Hufanga of USC, Joseph Ossai of Texas, Jeremiah Owusu-koramoah of Notre Dame, Tarron Jackson of Coastal Carolina and Patrick Surtain II of Alabama.
2 COLLEGE FOOTBALL: Jalon Jones threw for two touchdowns and ran for one as Jackson State beat NAIA Edward Waters 53-0 Sunday in Deion Sanders’ coaching debut. The Pro Football Hall of Famer had a bucket of ice dumped over his head at the end of the game as a home crowd of some 12,000 fans cheered the win in Jackson, Miss.
3 PRO BASEBALL: Mariners president/ceo Kevin Mather resigned after the emergence of a video where he expressed opinions about organizational strategy and some players. Chairman John Stanton said the comments were inappropriate and do not represent the views of the franchise. Stanton will serve as Ceo/president on an interim basis.
4 PRO BASEBALL: Kevin Pillar and the Mets finalized a $5 million, one-year contract that adds depth and balance to New York’s outfield.
5 WOMEN’S SOCCER: Sarah Stratigakis scored in stoppage time Sunday night to give Canada a 1-0 victory over Argentina in the Shebelieves Cup at Orlando, Fla. The round-robin tournament ends Wednesday as the tournamentleading U.S. plays Argentina and Canada meets Brazil.
