1 OLYMPICS: Paul Mcmullen, a runner who was a member of the 1996 U.S. Olympic team, died in a ski accident in northern Michigan, Eastern Michigan University said Friday. He was 49. In ’96, Mcmullen won the U.S. Olympic Trials in the 1500 meters, qualifying for the Olympics in Atlanta that year. He made it to the semifinals.

2 OLYMPICS: Olympic“miracle” hockey star and Iron Range sports legend Mark Pavelich was found dead Thursday in a central Minnesota residentia­l treatment center. Pavelich, who turned 63 a week ago, died at Eagle’s Healing Nest, according to the Midwest Medical Examiner’s Office. He was receiving mental health treatment there for the past several months. At the time of his death he was under civil commitment for a violent assault on a North Shore neighbor nearly 1½ years ago.

3 PRO BASEBALL: Pitcher Sam Dyson was suspended for the 2021 season by Major League Baseball on Friday under the domestic violence policy of the league and the players’ associatio­n. The 32-year-old free agent last played in 2019 for San Francisco and Minnesota.

4 PRO HOCKEY: The Calgary Flames fired coach Geoff Ward on Thursday night and replaced him with Darryl Sutter, who will lead the team for the second time. Calgary went 11-11-2 under Ward this season. Ward became the interim coach when Bill Peters resigned in November 2019 following an investigat­ion by the team into allegation­s of racism and assault by Peters in the minor leagues several years earlier. Ward was formally named the coach in September 2020.

5 PRO GOLF: Jennifer Kupcho and Austin Ernst each shot their second straight 5-under 67 to share the second-round lead Friday in the LPGA Tour’s Drive On Championsh­ip at Golden Ocala in central Florida.
