1 Floyd jury selection underway: The jury selection for a former Minneapolis police officer charged in George Floyd’s death began Tuesday with two jurors picked and five dismissed. Derek Chauvin is charged with second-degree murder and manslaughter. Floyd’s death occurred after Chauvin pressed his knee against Floyd’s neck for about nine minutes.
2 Hawaii could raise income tax: Hawaii is considering overtaking California as the state with the highest income tax rate. The Hawaii Senate was expected to vote Tuesday on legislation that would impose a 16% tax on individuals earning more than $200,000 a year. The proposed new rate would also outstrip the largest combined local and state tax rate in the nation, paid by top earners in New York City (12.7%).
3 Puerto Ricodebt plan filed:a framework outlining how Puerto Rico will restructure at least $35 billion in public debt and more than $50 billion in public pension liabilities threatens a 10% cut to pensions if no agreement is reached with retirees. The plan was filed in U.S. court by a federal control board that oversees Puerto Rico’s finances and seeks to lift the U.S. territory’s government out of bankruptcy.
4 Obama, Hamm in Hall: Former first lady Michelle Obama and soccer star Mia Hamm were chosen for the National Women’s Hall of Fame as part of a Class of 2021 that also includes former Pepsico Chief Executive Indra Nooyi and retired Brig. Gen. Rebecca Halstead.
5 Belgium hits crime: Belgian police made 48 arrests during an unprecedented operation targeting organized crime, after investigators cracked an encrypted communications network. About 200 searches mobilizing more than 1,500 officers were carried out simultaneously, the federal prosecutors’ office said.
