PRO TENNIS: Top-ranked Ash Barty rallied from a big third-set deficit and overcame a match point to win her opening Miami Open match against qualifier Kristina Kucova, 6-3, 4-6, 7-5. Barty, who won the most recent Miami Open title in 2019, trailed 5-2 in the final set. Wild card Ana Konjuh of Croatia upset No. 18-seeded Madison Keys in the second round, 6-4, 6-2.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL: West Virginia safety Tykee Smith is entering the transfer portal, he announced Wednesday night on Twitter. Smith was an Associated Press third team All-american as a sophomore last season, when he was fourth on the Mountainee­rs with 61 tackles. He also had two intercepti­ons and five pass breakups. Smith’s decision came two months after West Virginia defensive backs coach Jahmile Addae left for the same position at Georgia.

COLLEGE HOCKEY: Notre Dame is out of the NCAA Division I men’s hockey tournament due to multiple positive COVID-19 test results and contact tracing within its Tier I testing group. The Fighting Irish were the fourth seed in the Albany Regional and were slated to take on top-seeded Boston College on Saturday at the Times Union Center. BC now advances to the next round.

OBITUARY: Former St. Louis Blues defenseman Bob Plager was killed Wednesday in a car crash in St. Louis. He was 78. Police said Plager was alone in his vehicle when it collided with a vehicle carrying two women on Interstate 64 in St. Louis about 1:30 p.m. One of the women sustained minor injuries. No other details were released.

OBITUARY: Bobby Brown, an infielder who played on five World Series champions with the New York Yankees and later became a cardiologi­st and president of the American League, has died. He was 96.
