1 Rescued: A Buddhist monk who was trapped by floodwaters inside a cave in northern Thailand for four days has been rescued by divers, a provincial official said Wednesday. The 46-year-old monk, Phra Manas, entered Tham Phra Sai Ngam cave in Phitsanulok province on Saturday to meditate. Heavy rain from a thunderstorm raised water levels inside the cave, blocking the entrance and stranding the monk.
2 Not charged: A prosecutor said Wednesday she has decided not to charge Detroit officers in the fatal shooting of a Black man who was recorded by police body cameras as he shot at an officer. The July 10 shooting of Hakim Littleton was in self-defense, Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy said.“the officers in this case acted with lawful self-defense of self and others and thus there will be no charges in this particular case,”worthy said.
3 Indicted: A Walmart worker in West Virginia has been accused of stealing $124,000 in gift cards. Kenneth Werkau of Clarington, Ohio, was indicted Wednesday in federal court on three counts of wire fraud. Prosecutors said Werkau, 63, was employed at a Walmart in Moundsville. He is accused of stealing and activating gift cards over a five-month period.
4 Released: A judge Wednesday ordered the release of a former Dallas police officer accused of ordering two killings in 2017 after prosecutors said that they don’t have enough evidence to move forward with the capital murder case against him. Bryan Riser, a 13-year veteran of the Dallas Police Department, was fired after his colleagues arrested him in March on charges in an alleged murder-for-hire scheme.
Approved: Baltimorevoters will get 5 to decide whether the city should take back full control of the Police Department from the state for the first time since 1860 after a bill on the referendum sailed through the Maryland General Assembly.
