1 Politico sold: Politico, the Washington news site that has prospered for years as Beltway professionals gobbled up its scoops and inside-baseball style reporting, will have a new owner. German publishing giant Axel Springer agreed to buy Politico in a deal announced Thursday that could shake up the Washington media scene.
2 Tropical depression forms: A tropical depression has formed near Jamaica, and it could threaten Cuba and the Cayman Islands as Tropical Storm Ida and potentially the northern Gulf Coast as a Category 3 hurricane. The National Hurricane Center is also monitoring a disturbance in the central Atlantic, southeast of Bermuda, that is expected to turn into a tropical depression by the weekend.
3 Sexual assault allegations: A producer at the ABC News program “Good Morning America” accused Michael Corn, a former senior executive producer of the show, of sexually assaulting her and creating a toxic work environment in a lawsuit filed Wednesday against Corn and ABC. Kirstyn Crawford said in the lawsuit that Corn sexually assaulted her in 2015 duringa work trip to Los Angeles to cover the Academy Awards. Corn denied the allegations in a statement.
4 Problem with building: Video released by a team of federal investigators shows more evidence of extensive corrosion and overcrowded concrete reinforcement in a Miami-area condominium that collapsed in June, killing 98 people.
5 Minnesota fires: Dozens of homes, cabins and outbuildings have been destroyed or damaged in northeastern Minnesota as the state’s largest wildfire continues burning uncontained, according to Superior National Forest officials.
