PRO FOOTBALL: Carolina Panthers starting right guard John Miller was placed on the COVID-19 reserve list and will miss Carolina’s home opener on Sunday against the New York Jets. Panthers coach Matt Rhule said Miller will be out 10 days, which according to league rules would indicate that he was an unvaccinat­ed player who tested positive. 49ers rookie quarterbac­k Trey Lance showed signs of progress in returning from a finger injury but there are still questions about whether he will be able to play in the season opener. Lance no longer has a splint on the index finger on his throwing hand after suffering a small chip fracture in the exhibition finale on Aug. 29.

Washington’s big-money addition at wide receiver, took part in his first practice with the team since offseason workouts Monday after dealing with a nagging groin injury and missing time on the NFL’S reserve/covid-19 list. The reigning NFC East champions signed him to a $34.5 million, three-year contract to bring a dynamic dimension to an offense that struggled last year.

SOCCER: Pelé has had an apparent tumor on the right side of his colon removed in an operation. Albert Einstein Hospital in Sao Paulo said Monday the 80-year-old soccer great is in an intensive care unit and will be transferre­d to a regular room today. The operation was a “great victory,” Pelé said on his social media channels.

SOCCER: Jean-pierre Adams, the former France and Paris Saintgerma­in defender who spent 39 years in a coma, died at age 73. Adams was injured in a match in 1982 and required knee surgery, but an anesthetic error caused him to fall into a coma.
