THE HOT CORNER
1 COLLEGE FOOTBALL: Boston College quarterback Phil Jurkovec underwent surgery for a hand injury that knocked him out of Saturday’s game against Umass and “could potentially miss the remainder of the year,” the school said Monday. BC also said kicker Aaron Boumerhi is out for the season with a hip injury. Jurkovec was the ACC co-quarterback of the week for Sept. 7, when he completed 16 of 24 passes for 303 yards and ran for 61 more in a 51-0 victory over FCS Colgate.
2 COLLEGE FOOTBALL: Purdue running back Zander Horvath will miss four to eight weeks with a broken fibula, coach Jeff Brohm said Monday. The fifth-year senior was injured during Saturday’s 49-0 win at Uconn. Horvath was expected to be a key for the Boilermakers after leading the team in rushing with 442 yards on 89 carries and earning third-team all-big Ten honors last season.
3 COLLEGE FOOTBALL: No. 24
Miami has lost running back Don Chaney Jr. for the remainder of the season with a knee injury, and starting linebacker Keontra Smith will miss several weeks with a leg injury. Both were injured in the Hurricanes’ 25-23 win over Appalachian State on Saturday.
4 COLLEGE FOOTBALL: Virginia
Tech coach Justin Fuente says tight end James Mitchell will have knee surgery and miss the rest of the season following an injury suffered Saturday. Mitchell, the preseason ALL-ACC first-team tight end, took a low hit on a run from the 2-yard line against Middle Tennessee.
5 PRO GOLF: Will Zalatoris has been voted PGA Tour rookie of the year, the first player in 20 years to receive the award without being a full PGA Tour member. Zalatoris played well enough on the Korn Ferry Tour in 2020 to earn a spot in the U.S. Open at Winged Foot, where he tied for sixth.
