Cherokee County Japanese eatery fails health check

A Cherokee County restaurant specializing in Japanese cuisine failed a recent health inspection. Atami Grill and Sushi in Canton scored 55/U on Sept. 15. Previous scores were 96/A on May 24 and 84/B on July 30, 2020.

According to the report, management was unable to provide an employee health policy for all food service workers in kitchen.

■ Other violations:

■ Food contact surfaces and equipment were very dirty.

■ Employees were not properly sanitizing cleaned multiuse equipment and utensils before they are reused.

■ Employee drinks were stored in the bottom of a prep cooler.

■ Many items in the sushi bar and (some items like tempura batter) in the main kitchen were stored uncovered.

■ Eggs and crab rangoon stored in a prep cooler were at temperatures higher than 41 degrees.

■ An unidentified white poisonous powder (purchased from Chinatown) was used to control roaches by being mixed in solution and used in a sprayer in restaurant.

■ There was a white crystal product in a container with no name labeling.

■ Sushi fish was falling off the tray onto the bottom of the sushi cooler.

■ Wiping cloths were not stored in sanitizer solution.

■ Flooring underneath equipment, inside/within storage areas, and some walls had built up dirt, grime and grease.

■ This facility has an extremely bad roach problem, bordering on infestation.

Most restaurants with failed scores are reinspected within 10 days.
