1 World War II bomb explodes:
A World War II bomb exploded at a construction site next to a busy railway line in Munich on Wednesday, injuring four people, one of them seriously, German authorities said. Unexploded bombs are still found frequently in Germany, even 76 years after the end of the war, and often during work on construction sites. They are usually defused or disposed of in controlled explosions.
2 Music figure’s wife killed:
Jacqueline Avant, a Los Angeles philanthropist and the wife of music legend Clarence Avant, was fatally shot in Beverly Hills, California, early Wednesday, according to authorities. Jacqueline Avant was a local philanthropist who was president of the Neighbors of Watts and served on the board of directors of the International Student Center at UCLA.
3 Belarus targets journalists:
Authorities in Belarus raided the homes of dozens of journalists and activists Wednesday, according to a human rights group. Independent journalists, human rights advocates and activists in at least nine large Belarusian cities had phones and computers seized during the searches and were interrogated, the Viasna human rights center reported.
4 Defazio to retire: Rep. Peter
Defazio, who has been a staunch advocate for environmental issues, said Wednesday he will not seek reelection next year. The 74-year-old Democrat is the chairman of the House Transportation Committee. “It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve as Congressman for the Fourth District of Oregon,” Defazio said.
5 Volcano threatens church:
A fresh river of lava from the volcano on Spain’s La Palma island threatened Wednesday to engulf a church that has so far survived the eruption that shows no signs of relenting after 10 weeks.
