1 World War II bomb explodes:

A World War II bomb exploded at a constructi­on site next to a busy railway line in Munich on Wednesday, injuring four people, one of them seriously, German authoritie­s said. Unexploded bombs are still found frequently in Germany, even 76 years after the end of the war, and often during work on constructi­on sites. They are usually defused or disposed of in controlled explosions.

2 Music figure’s wife killed:

Jacqueline Avant, a Los Angeles philanthro­pist and the wife of music legend Clarence Avant, was fatally shot in Beverly Hills, California, early Wednesday, according to authoritie­s. Jacqueline Avant was a local philanthro­pist who was president of the Neighbors of Watts and served on the board of directors of the Internatio­nal Student Center at UCLA.

3 Belarus targets journalist­s:

Authoritie­s in Belarus raided the homes of dozens of journalist­s and activists Wednesday, according to a human rights group. Independen­t journalist­s, human rights advocates and activists in at least nine large Belarusian cities had phones and computers seized during the searches and were interrogat­ed, the Viasna human rights center reported.

4 Defazio to retire: Rep. Peter

Defazio, who has been a staunch advocate for environmen­tal issues, said Wednesday he will not seek reelection next year. The 74-year-old Democrat is the chairman of the House Transporta­tion Committee. “It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve as Congressma­n for the Fourth District of Oregon,” Defazio said.

5 Volcano threatens church:

A fresh river of lava from the volcano on Spain’s La Palma island threatened Wednesday to engulf a church that has so far survived the eruption that shows no signs of relenting after 10 weeks.
