THE HOT CORNER

-

1 COLLEGE FOOTBALL: The Atlantic Coast Conference named Wake Forest’s Dave Clawson its coach of the year and Pittsburgh quarterback Kenny Pickett its player of the year. Pickett also was named offensive player of the year. Other winners were Florida State defensive end Jermaine Johnson II (defensive player of the year), Miami quarterback Tyler Van Dyke (rookie of the year and offensive rookie of the year), and Clemson safety Andrew Mukuba (defensive rookie of the year). Clawson is the ninth Wake Forest coach to win the honor and the first since Jim Grobe in 2006, the last year the Demon Deacons won an ACC title.

2 COLLEGE FOOTBALL: Colorado State fired coach Steve Addazio after a tumultuous two seasons that included an ejection in what would prove to be his final game for the Rams. Addazio finished with a 4-12 record.

3 PRO FOOTBALL: Jalen Hurts said he’s “ready to go” and a sprained ankle won’t affect his performance when his Eagles (5-7) visit the Jets on Sunday. The second-year quarterback is coming off his worst game as a pro: three interceptions in a 13-7 loss to the Giants.

4 PRO BASKETBALL: Heat star Bam Adebayo needs surgery to repair a torn ligament in his right thumb and is likely out until at least mid-january. It’s the first major injury of Adebayo’s five pro seasons. He’s averaging a careerbest 18.7 points this season, with 10.2 rebounds per game.

5 SKIING: Coronavirus quarantine exemptions were given Thursday to hundreds of people arriving in Switzerland from Canada so women’s World Cup ski races can go ahead next week. The two super-g races were in doubt after the Swiss federal government added Canada to its travel red list, which requires a mandatory quarantine to help control the virus and the new omicron variant.
