THE HOT CORNER

-

1 COLLEGE FOOTBALL: When it comes to being coy about personnel in order to gain a tactical advantage, clearly it’s like father, like son in the Iowa program. Following a week of preparations for today’s Citrus Bowl in which Hawkeyes offensive coordinator Brian Ferentz repeatedly refused to name a starting QB, coach Kirk Ferentz coyly did the same Friday. No. 15 Iowa (10-3) heads into its showdown against No. 22 Kentucky (9-3) without a definitive starter under center.

2 COLLEGE FOOTBALL: Cincinnati CB Coby Bryant, winner of the Jim Thorpe Award that goes to the nation’s best defensive back, changed his number for the College Football Playoff semifinal at the Cotton Bowl against No. 1 Alabama on Friday. Yes, Bryant is named after the late NBA great, even with the different spelling of the first name. For the playoff game, Bryant switched from No. 7 to No. 8, one of the two numbers the basketball Hall of Fame player wore with the Lakers.

3 COLLEGE FOOTBALL: West Virginia junior WR Winston Wright is entering the transfer portal after leading the team in receiving in each of the past two seasons, including 63 catches for 688 yards and five TDS this season.

4 PRO SOCCER: A continuing coronavirus outbreak at Newcastle led to Sunday’s game at Southampton being postponed, the Premier League said. That brings the total to 18 Premier League games postponed in the past three weeks.

5 SKELETON: Tomass Dukurs got his first World Cup victory on his home track nearly 18 years ago, and hadn’t won another race since — until Friday. Back on home ice in Sigulda, Latvia, he held off his brother — 59-time World Cup race winner Martins Dukurs — for a victory. Tomass finished his two runs in 1 minute, 41.36 seconds, and Martins crossed in 1:41.42.
