1 Brazilian leader hospitalized:
Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro was taken to a Sao Paulo hospital for tests early Monday after experiencing abdominal discomfort, the government said in a statement. The hospital where he was admitted said in a statement the president had an intestinal obstruction and was in stable condition. Bolsonaro, 66, has experienced a series of medical issues since he was stabbed in the abdomen on the campaign trail in 2018.
2 Trump endorses strongman:
Former U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday endorsed Hungary’s right-wing Prime Minister Viktor Orban, offering his “complete support” for the leader who faces a close election this spring. Orban is accused of dismantling democratic institutions, fostering corruption and thwarting judicial independence and media pluralism.
3 Starbucks institutes vaccine
requirement: Starbucks said its U.S. employees must be vaccinated against COVID-19 or submit to weekly testing by Feb. 9. The new rules apply to staff in cafes, offices, plants and distribution centers, according to a message to employees.
4 Serbians protest mining:
Hundreds of people on Monday blocked roads in several locations in Serbia demanding that the authorities scrap any plans for lithium mining, which ecologists say would devastate the environment. Several minor incidents were reported as angry drivers sought to push through the crowds that halted traffic in the northern city of Novi Sad and other locations in the country.
5 Turkish inflation up: Turkey’s yearly inflation climbed by the fastest pace in 19 years, jumping to 36.08% in December. The Turkish Statistical Institute said the consumer price index increased by 13.58% in December.
