1 Jan. 6 defendant pleads guilty: A California man who stormed the U.S. Capitol, opened the doors to other rioters and sat in the Senate chair of then-vice President Mike Pence pleaded guilty to a federal charge Thursday. Christian Secor, 23, of Costa Mesa entered the plea in a Washington court to obstructin­g an official proceeding. Sentencing guidelines call for 21 to 27 months in prison, or 53 to 61 months in prison if Secor is found to have caused injuries or property damage.

2 Trump pays fines: Former President Donald Trump has paid the $110,000 in fines he racked up after being held in contempt of court for being slow to respond to a civil subpoena issued by New York’s attorney general. Trump paid the fine Thursday but must still submit additional paperwork in order to have the contempt order lifted, the office of Attorney General Letitia James said Friday. A judge declared Trump in contempt of court on April 25.

3 Cuba invitation mulled: President Joe Biden is considerin­g inviting a Cuban representa­tive to the Summit of the Americas, a U.S. official said Friday, as his administra­tion tries to salvage an event that risks collapsing over disagreeme­nts about the guest list. It’s unclear if Cuba would accept the invitation.

4 Canada to ban Huawei tech: Wireless carriers in Canada won’t be allowed to install Huawei equipment in their high-speed 5G networks, the Canadian government said Thursday. The U.S., Britain, Australia and New Zealand had previously banned Huawei.

5 De Blasio to run: Former New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said Friday he will run for Congress in a redrawn district that includes his Brooklyn home. De Blasio, whose second mayoral term ended last year, announced he will seek the Democratic nomination for the 10th Congressio­nal District.
