Escaped murderer killed: A convicted murderer on the run since escaping a prison bus after stabbing its driver last month was fatally shot by law enforcemen­t after he killed a family of five and stole a truck from a rural weekend cabin, a Texas prison system spokesman said. Gonzalo Lopez, 46, died in a shootout with police Thursday in Jourdanton, about 35 miles south of San Antonio.

Tropical storm warning issued:

Tropical storm warnings were issued early Friday for much of the Florida peninsula, Cuba and the Bahamas as a system that battered Mexico moves through the Gulf of Mexico, bringing threats of heavy rain and wind for the weekend. The warning affects both Florida’s Gulf Coast and Atlantic Coast, from just below Tampa Bay and Daytona Beach to the Florida Keys and Dry Tortugas. Airline raises revenue forecast:

American Airlines on Friday raised its forecast of second-quarter revenue, joining a growing list of airlines expecting demand this summer to top previous forecasts as the travel industry recovers from the pandemic. American predicted that revenue will rise 11% to 13% above the second quarter of 2019. Poles gather firewood: Poland’s authoritie­s are reminding citizens they can rummage forests for firewood to heat their homes as energy costs soar. Opponents of the government called the reminder a sign that it’s fumbling the economy. Inflation in Poland is now nearly 14%, with fuel prices surging to more than $1.87 a liter.

Watergate coverage editor dies:

Barry Sussman, the Washington Post editor who directly oversaw the Watergate investigat­ion by reporters Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein, providing invaluable contributi­ons to the news coverage that helped force President Richard Nixon from office, died June 1 at his home in Rockville, Md. He was 87.
